Switching utilities when you move house — the 2026 UK checklist

Everything you need to switch gas, electric, broadband, water, TV licence and council tax when you move house in the UK.

Two weeks before you move

  • Take opening meter readings at the old and new property on move day — photo timestamps count as evidence.
  • Give your gas and electric supplier at least 48 hours' notice. You keep the same supplier at the new address unless you actively switch.
  • Compare tariffs — moving is the perfect trigger to lock in a cheaper fixed deal.
  • Book broadband transfer 14 days ahead. Openreach engineer slots fill up fast in month-ends.

Water, council tax and TV licence

  • Water: contact both the outgoing and incoming water company (postcode-based, no choice of supplier in England & Wales).
  • Council tax: notify BOTH the old and new council on your move day — you'll get a closing bill and a new one.
  • TV Licence: log in and change address online at tvlicensing.co.uk — it takes 30 seconds.

Save your move-day energy readings here

  • Old property gas + electric opening reading, taken at handover.
  • New property gas + electric readings, taken before turning anything on.
  • Send both to suppliers within 48 hours to lock in accurate final bills.
